Wu Gorge(巫峡) Travel Guide

Location and Overview

Wu Gorge is one of the most famous and beautiful sections among the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. It lies between Badong County in Hubei Province and Wushan County in Chongqing. With a length of about 45 kilometers, it is known for its deep valleys, steep cliffs, and mysterious charm.

Main Attractions

  • Twelve Peaks: The Twelve Peaks on both sides of Wu Gorge are the highlights. Each peak has its own unique shape and name, and they are often shrouded in mist, creating a dreamy and fairy - like atmosphere. Among them, Goddess Peak is the most famous. Standing gracefully like a beautiful maiden looking out over the river, it has inspired countless legends and poems.
  • Lush Mountains and Verdant Forests: The mountains along Wu Gorge are covered with thick forests. The combination of various trees, shrubs, and wildflowers presents a vivid green palette in spring and summer. In autumn, the leaves turn into beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange, adding a touch of color to the landscape.
  • Misty Scenery: Wu Gorge is often filled with mist, especially in the early morning or after rain. The mist shrouds the peaks and the river, making the scenery look like an ink - wash painting. It gives visitors a sense of mystery and tranquility as if they have stepped into a fairyland.
  • Gorges within Gorges: Inside Wu Gorge, there are some smaller gorges, which add to the complexity and uniqueness of the landscape. These gorges have their own features, such as narrow passages, hidden waterfalls, and unique rock formations.

How to Get There

  • By Cruise: Taking a Yangtze River cruise is an excellent way to visit Wu Gorge. Many cruises traveling between Chongqing and Yichang pass through this section. On the cruise, you can enjoy the changing scenery along the way and have a comfortable journey.
  • By Land: You can first reach Wushan County or Badong County by bus or train. Then, take local transportation to the scenic spots near Wu Gorge. However, this way may not provide as extensive a view as a cruise.
